An Overview of Suppressive PersonsWhat Does this Term Commonly Used by Scientologists Mean?Suppressive Persons are to be avoided by Scientologists, but how does an indiviual identify one or how does a non-scientologist know if they fall into this category?
Every group has its detractors. When the “Tom Cruise: Scientologist” video was shown on Gawker.com, the actor could be seen using a phrase “how to avoid S.P.s.” S.P. is an acronym that, according to the Church of Scientology dictionary, means suppressive person. The person unfamiliar with Scientology terms and practices might wonder exactly what an SP or suppressive person is. The same source used to determine the meaning of the acronym also gives the definition of a suppressive person. A suppressive person is a person who actively seeks to damage or suppress Scientology. If a group of people engages in these activities that are detrimental to betterment activities, it is referred to by the Church of Scientology as a suppressive group. Further Defining a Suppressive PersonThe Church of Scientology's Frequently Asked Question page goes on to say that a suppressive person can also be called an antisocial personality. This meaning differs from the standard definition of an antisocial personality used by the psychiatric profession. The suppressive person, according to the Scientology FAQ is incapable of betterment, frequently attacks the wrong target, and makes those around him physically or mentally ill. These individuals do not support any organization working for the betterment of mankind and will confess to the most heinous of crimes. The full list of characteristics for a suppressive person can be found here. Do Scientologists Avoid Suppressive Persons?A Scientologist will not go out of his way to associate with a suppressive person, but a member of the church limits his conversation with these individuals to topics like the weather or sports teams. Topics that might cause him or her to fall back on the progress of betterment or unfavorable to the Church of Scientology are not discussed with suppressive persons. The Church of Scientology believes that many of the problems that have plagued mankind throughout the centuries can be traced to suppressive persons. Most of us do not have to worry about these dangerous individuals, except for the negative impact they can have on our lives. Suppressive persons do not make up a large percentage of the population, although many of them are rumored to hate movies like Top Gun, Mission Impossible, Days of Thunder and any movie starring John Travolta. Disliking the movie Hairspray is rumored not to be a warning sign of a suppressive person. Resources: Scientology and Dianetics Glossary
